The Lake Orion Lions Club is sponsoring the 72nd annual “Light up the Night” Flare night spectacular Fri June 30th. The lions clubs started in 1917 as a service club to help the disadvantaged. At a convention is Sandusky OH. Helen Keller was asked to speak, in her speech she challenged the lion’s to become ” The Knights of the Blind in the crusade against Darkness” and we have been doing this ever since.
The Lake Orion Lions are using this event as a visual acronym for awareness of the “Prevention of Blindness” The Lake Orion Lions was started in 1938 and have sponsored the Flare night spectacular for the last few decades. Last year we applied for a Guinness book of world records for “The most lighted flares lighted around a lake or shoreline” For the first time we assembled a team including aerial and video photography using decorated navy veteran “with combat experience” reconnaissance expert photographer Dale Fisher of “Dale Fisher Helophoto” His team of video photographer Joanne Ackerman along with Helophoto pilot Chuck Blaylock of “Magnum Helicopter” At aprox 10 PM at dusk they recorded the record setting attempt using specialty photography and video equipment taking dozens of photos and videos to use to count the flares lighted. Dale Fishers team counted a minimum of 4800 to possably 5100 flares lighted. WDIV channel 4 Detroit did a live interview and broadcast with Lion Rick Rice along with Police chief Jerry Narsh and fire chief Bob Smith. Local Cable channel ONTV also did a Live filming of the shoreline. The record attempt application, photo, video, witness and Stewart statments evidence documentation have been submitted as required. As this was a new category the record is being evaluated we should be notified soon as to there decision.
The Lake Orion Lion Club is making available prints of the aerial photos of the “One time record event” for a limited time on our web site lakorionlions.org We purchase more flares every year and have sold out of flares the last several years. So buy early . Flares may be purchased at Wonder Cleaners and Laundry’s 835 S. Lapeer rd. Lake Orion and around the lake on a limited basis. The Lake Orion Lions are grateful of the support of our community and as part of the largest service organization in the world. Our motto is “WE SERVE”
